I am looking for a jump start weight loss video. Any suggestions. I do not want something that is super fast to the point where I will not be able to do it. I am fairly new at excercising and would not like to over do it or else I will not stick to it. I’ve been working out consistently for about a year, but my weight loss has been really slow. I’ve only lost about 15-18lbs. I’ve also changed my diet and started eating a lot healthier. I haven’t been intaking much protein and I believe that is a reason why my weight loss has been slow. How much protein should I take to speed up my weight loss? Are there any recipes, shakes or vitamins I should be taking?
I workout at least 3-4x a week. On average I’m at the gym for 1hr. – 1.5hrs. I’ve been attending the RPM & Body Pump classes at least 2x a week. On the other days I’m doing cardio and weightlifting. I also do resistence training.

I’ll admit it. One of the hardest things I have ever done in my life is trying to lose weight. Not because of lack of motivation or commitment, no, I had PLENTY of that. The problem for me was deciding on the ‘how’. It seems as if everywhere you look, there is a new diet out on the market that promises incredible way to help you lose weight and have a perfect body. The before and after weight lose all look fantastic and are enough to sway just about anyone who is desperate to achieve the body they desire. The choices seem endless and all too often, at least for me anyways, I ended up making the wrong choice. So, how does someone know what is the RIGHT weight loss program for them?

The first step in any successful weight loss management is and will always be an exercise program which may include weight strength training. Nothing is a substitute for getting up and getting moving. Check with your doctor, make sure you have no health problems that would prevent you from getting physical, and get to it! Jumping rope, jogging, even brisk walking will start the calories burning and get your program off to a great start. In addition, make sure to add some resistance training to your regimen. For those less experience out there, this means weight lifting. Don’t groan, I know what you’re thinking, but here are the facts. Muscle burns fat. The more muscle you have, the more fat you will burn. Even while you are sitting down watching TV, your muscles will be burning fat. Now, don’t think that just because I am talking about lifting some weights you are going to turn into some bulky bodybuilder. That just doesn’t happen. Your physique will become toned, your muscles will start to show, and your clothes will fit better. All the things you want to have happen.

Now, exercise alone may not be all you need. For some of us, quality weight losing programs are what we need in addition to our exercise routines, but back to the original question, how do we know which one to pick?

When choosing a weight loss plan or product, the key thing to keep in mind is, “Is this something that I could do?” Be sure to learn all the parameters of the program or product and ask yourself this question. Try to picture yourself following the guidelines and outlined and be realistic with yourself. Is this something you will really stick to? Does the cost fit into your budget? Are there any special foods or supplements you will need to purchase? Many people begin weight loss program with the best of intentions, but decide later on that they made the wrong choice. According to the success of the studies briefly described above, it’s possible that hypnosis does in fact assist in the weight loss battle. It may be an option for you if you’ve tried everything else and are now lacking motivation to continue toward your weight loss goals. However, you should not expect to see dramatic results based on hypnosis alone. You should also educate yourself about this form of treatment in order to make an educated and informed decision.

A short overview of simple exercises you can do in your own home which can aid healthy weight loss.

Effective home exercises to lose weight.

To lose weight effectively and in a healthy way you need to be doing exercise either in the gym or at home. To do this you must ensure you are fulfilling the four areas of exercise and using the key techniques within each area to be successful. This can then be combined to the nutrition ideal for your individual body chemistry and you will lose weight.

Cardiovascular (aerobic) training outside the gym.

The simple way to do this is to start walking. This under rated act will increase your energy levels, fitness and contribute to fat loss.

If very new to exercising again do not put undue pressure upon yourself, instead start by just going for a 5 – 10 minute walk and gradually increase. Incorporate walking into your lifestyle e.g. walk to the shops instead of driving, walk at lunchtime instead of working through it etc. IF you do this you will soon notice improvements after just a short while of making walking part of your life.

If you are already active then you should consider power walking, which is walking at a fast pace so you are out of breath or jogging (assuming your muscles can protect the joints). Other ways of doing aerobic exercise would be to start swimming, cycling etc

The key to losing weight with whatever exercise you do is examining whether you are getting out of breath (only slightly rather than panting for dear life). Once you can perform this for a duration ask yourself if you can step up the intensity. The emphasis should be on short sharp bouts of aerobic exercise to lose weight effectively.

Resistance training in the house

Resistance training is most easily performed within a gym but this is not a necessity. Resistance training is performing a movement that brings fatigue to the muscles before you have performed 15 repetitions. Therefore any exercise that can be manipulated to do this is resistance exercise.

For those new to resistance training the best way to start is by performing the two key resistance training exercises below. If done correctly they will greatly contribute to creating the hormonal environment inside the body that is conductive to weight loss:

Squat

The ability to squat down to the floor is a fundamental and essential trait in life. To do a squat simply:

Stand by a chair.

Crouch down so that your buttocks touch the chair and then return to the standing position. This exercise is just like sitting down except you are not letting your body weight rest on the chair before standing up.

Increase difficulty by using a lower chair until you can bend the knees to a 90 degrees angle.

Add in extra weight as necessary to ensure you are at the point of fatigue before 15 reps.

Lunge

The ability to step forward with balance and control is essential in everyday movement. To perform a lunge:

Take a slightly larger than normal step forward.

Keeping your front knee over your foot drop down so the back knee is one inch from the floor. (do not let the front knee go past the toes as can cause pain)

Push off your front leg to return to the start

Repeat with your other leg

Add in extra weight as necessary to ensure you are at the point of fatigue before 15 reps.

Perform these exercises a few times per week and work up to 15 repetitions of each exercise then add in extra weight in any form possible.

This process can then be extended to other exercises to target the whole body.

Core training

The core is trained when performing certain resistance exercises e.g. squat, lunge but needs to be isolated out also. The simplest thing you can do is to practice contracting the key core muscles that support the lower back; these are the deep stomach and pelvic floor muscles. Contracting these together is called ‘engaging the core’

Using this principle you can then perform any number of holds to challenge the muscles around the mid section. Using a swiss ball is a great way to do this as it adds variety and fun into the programme.

Flexibility training

To retain and develop flexibility you should be doing an active stretching routine every morning and a static stretching routine to restore ideal posture by stretching the tight muscles.

Keys to home training

The key to home training is intensity and variation. The main problem that training outside the gym presents is how to progress the resistance exercise so fatigue is induced before 15 reps. When done correctly everyone is capable of lifting quite heavy weights which will bring the benefits of weight loss and improved health. The key is keeping the weight used at a high enough intensity to challenge you. Aerobic training must also be increased in intensity to keep you challenged and not over performed as it will break the body down and inhibit weight loss.

When done correctly home training can be very powerful but if done incorrectly no more effectively than doing it wrong in the gym.

The programme must also be varied and structured within the confines of Periodization or the body will not make progress and become stale. At this point you will mentally become bored also.

Exercise is part of the weight loss equation

To lose weight without the other aspects of nutrition and lifestyle may prove to be impossible. It is essential you use metabolic typing to combine the specific foods your body needs to the right exercise to lose weight.

The so called rapid weight loss diet is one of the closest things to a crash diet. One description of a rapid weight loss diet is this – A crash diet is a diet which is extreme in its deprivations – typically severely restricting calorie intake. Meant to achieve rapid weight loss, a crash diet differs from outright starvation only slightly. Crash diets are typically unhealthy and are rarely – if ever – recommended by doctors or dietitians. Crash diets may lead to malnutrition.

When someone discontinues a crash diet, the “rebound-effect” is often experienced. This causes a person to eat far more than normal, causing them to regain both the weight that was recently lost due to the diet as well as additional weight. This is caused by an evolutionary trait of the human race that historically only took effect in times of famine: after a famine ended, people’s bodies naturally craved to regain both the weight that was lost, plus additional weight as well, in order to protect themselves in case of another famine.

I think it’s apparant that this type of diet is not in most peoples best interest. Let’s take it a little further. It has been observed that some crash dieting or rapid weight loss can lead to Anorexia. This is defined by a loss of appetite or lack of desire to eat.

When people experience appetite loss, decreased energy consumption will subsequently lead to weight loss. When inadequate calories are consumed, the body may become weaker and less able to tolerate many chalenges. As body weight decreases, cachexia sets in, and a general failure to thrive may make it more difficult to fight off illness and infection. A poor response to cancer treatments, reduced quality of life, and death may result from substantial weight loss. The spiraling effect of a patient’s reluctance to eat is a source of frequent anxiety for caregivers. Weight loss due to anorexia may be temporary or may continue at a life-threatening pace if the patient continues to consume inadequate energy to sustain body weight.

The most commonly known form of anorexia is satiation following the consumption of food. This can happen in all normal humans and is known as postprandial anorexia. It’s important and healthy as it prevents overeating and of course obesity. Anorexia nervosa is an eating disorder characterized by voluntary starvation and exercise stress. Anorexia nervosa is a complex disease, involving psychological and sociological components.

Needless to say, it is important to ensure that if you decide to take on a diet, make sure it is healthy and can supply the nutrients people need to carry on life in a healthy and vigorous manner. One of the most highly praised diets existing to day is the Mediterranean diet mostly due to its history and the formal research that has been undertaken. It is well worth your while to look into this particlular diet further if you have the slightest doubt about undertaking a rapid weight loss diet.
