Can sit ups and crunches help someone loose belly fat?
Can a person that is a little over weight loose belly fat by doing sit ups and crunches? If so, how and why?

Nope. I’m not a health nut by far, but I do know that although those exercises will help burn some calories, it’s not the answer. Best bet is to do aerobic exercises like walking and stuff you can do without losing your breath, for long periods of time. And your diet, of course.
The reason sit ups and crunches appear to make your belly flatter is because it tones the muscles there, basically holding the fat in. Try doing both. Personally, I like girls with a little meat, but that’s me.
